Then afterwards
   I will pour out my spirit on all flesh;
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
   your old men shall dream dreams,
   and your young men shall see visions.                Joel 2:28

The Book of Joel opens with a lament over a severe locust plague and drought which has devasted the lives of the people living in Israel.  It calls the nation to lamentation and repentance.  Repentance in the biblical tradition is a call to turn our lives around, to stop the harmful practices that damage ourselves, others, and the earth, and to live compassionately with one another and with the world.

If you do this, if you reorder your lives, the Prophet promises that gifts will be poured out on all people.  These gifts include the gift of prophesy given to the young.  In the prophetic actions of Greta Thunberg and children and young people around the world, actions driven by their lamentation for the earth, calling for governments to act, we can see the voice of prophesy at work.  It is not just the future generations who need the young to speak and act for our planet, we all need to listen and to learn from them and together call for the change we need.
